New Hampshire 12
Summer 2014
I moved to extremely-rural SWNH from rural upstate NY, and moved in with a roommate who was from Los Angeles. I got there two weeks after she did, and she hadn’t slept in two weeks because it was the first time she’s ever been that alone, and the silence of the boonies was “too loud” for her to be able to sleep through it.
I became her guide to all the nighttime noises/country noises. I grew up hunting/fishing/stream fishing/hiking/camping, and backswoods survival training as a hobby. I know all the sounds. Almost.
One night, she rushes into my room and says “Matt! Come quick, there’s something huge in the woods making a really loud noise!”. So, I got out of bed and went to investigate, expecting to hear porcupines quarreling or a moose lumbering through. I went to the sliding glass door and stuck my head out, and what I heard was something I’ve never heard before, and to this day I can’t identify.
Something just inside the treeline was expelling air from its extremely-huge lungs very, very hard, almost like the sound you would make if you were faking a really hard sneeze. There was a wheeze to it, and it was quickly and curtly moving a large volume of air. Over and over, every few seconds.
This wasn’t a deer/moose noise, but whatever it was it had absolutely massive lung capacity. If it was an owl, it was an owl the size of a schoolbus. Translation: it wasn’t an owl.
We came back inside and locked up and went to bed, no idea what it was.
Interesting to note: those woods did have an inordinate amount of bent over saplings that were pinned down by various debris and branches, but I didn’t think anything of that at the time. Now I see that some people associate that with sasquatch. Hmmm…
Also interesting to note: that house was way up on a hill (at the top of Old Troy road, Fitzwilliam NH, if you want to see the terrain). We used to sit out on the patio and watch the sun go down, and to the south almost every night there would be a UFO just hanging out on the horizon over Athol, MA. It would move around on the horizon for hours almost every night from late afternoon all the way until early morning sometimes. It would suddenly jet from Athol over toward Brattleboro, VT, and back, and then just continue to hover and tumble around, throwing different colored light. The last time we saw it, it was way closer, almost in our back yard, when a nasty thunderstorm was blowing in from the west. The violent winds up by the clouds didn’t blow it around at all; it hung there as if bolted to the sky.
Yet another interesting note from that property: One night at around 3am I had to put my deaf, elderly dog out to pee. I opened the sliding glass door to let her out, and I heard the infamous “mysterious sky noise” from youtube. It was early September, perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky, no breeze, 68 degrees, and it sounded like a Harrier jet was landing on the roof of our house, mixed with 200mph winds coursing through a canyon. I can’t believe no one woke up, as it should’ve woken up the entire neighborhood. There was nothing in the sky and it persisted for the entire time we were out there. My deaf old dog looked at me and opted against peeing, and just came back inside. I saw reports and video of that freaky noise on youtube years before, but I just thought it was viral marketing for a movie. Nope.
The house was also actively haunted, but they were cool/not an issue.
If the loud “exhale” noise was a squatch, all I’d have left to experience at that property would’ve been the Loch Ness monster! All we had was a large beaver pond with a huge beaver, though.

On two separate occasions I have gone up to New Hampshire to go hiking. The first time hiking this trail I was with my sister and step brother. We got about 2-3 min. into our hike when we all stop because we could smell this horrible odor. I can best decribe it was a wet animal. The smell seemed to go across the trail. So I had my step brother go on one side of the trail into the woods and I went to the other to see if we could maybe see what the smell had come from. As I came back out onto the trail I walked into the side where my brother was. As I reentered the woods my brother was about 25 ft in. As he walked back we could all hear something walking away from the direction he was walk toward. We all seemed a little freaked out but we decided to keep going. I have been hiking for years now and this was the first time I felt like something was watching us. We got about 15 min. in when it sounded like there was something following us. So we stopped for about 20 sec when we heard a loud scream come from deep in the woods. This wasn’t any of the local animals. We got about half way through when we came across the same smell once again. We ended up finishing the hike.
The second time I went back again with my girlfriend and my sister. I wanted to see if we could maybe see something this time. We got there about 9am. It was cold about 45 and there was an overcast. It had been raining and cold for about 2 days. We got about half way in when my sister and my girlfriend wanted to take some pictures of small pond that is back there.I kind of walked ahead of them when they yelled over to me “oh my god come look at this.” I ran over there and the was about a 13in footprint in the mud next to the lake. It looked like it had walked thought the shallow part of the pond. There was no way someone would have gone out there when it had been raining and very cold and took their shoe off and made it. There was no tracks in the mud on the trail that someone would have made by walking in. The track looked like it might have been a few days old and the rain washed out alot of details. We continued hiking and again there was that smell that I smelt about a year earlier.

I was driving home after visiting with my G/F and going up hill on Kearsarge Mtn Rd. I was nearing the junction with Old Winslow Rd. i have driven that road for the last 16 years so the eyes that seemed to be in the middle of the road and if it was the same proportions as a human would have stood about 7 feet tall. I let off the gas thinking it may be a moose but i realized the eyes were forward facing like a persons and not on the sides like a moose or horse. at this point i was about 50 yards away as it turned and moved off the road. it moved from right to left heading down hill. When i got home I opened the door of my truck and helped my puppy out of the truck. he started to go pee but sniffed the wind and tucked his tail as he bolted for the front door of the house.
I’ve spent my whole life in the northern NE woods and I haven’t seen eyes like this before. I’m young at 25 but I’ve spent more time in the woods than most.

My friends and I have had rocks thrown at us in the middle of the night at random occurances on
numerous occasions. We have wood knocked to try to communicate with what we think is a bigfoot and we have gotten some response but mostly just something big walking close to us through the woods, you can hear sticks snapping and it sounds like whatever it is, is walking on two legs. We have attempted to follow it and have had large sticks thrown at us from great distances and you can hear the sound of them being thrown.

Terrain Description: i do not know what county we were in but we were camped at
the convergence of the Sawyer River and the Saco River off Rt. 302. About 3/4 of a mile in from the roadway, over and abandoned railway. Dense woods, rocky rivers, very old forest what I would call virgin growth.

make a nice swimming hole with high cliffs on other side.
Are There Food and/or Water Sources in the Area? (if so, describe): lots of water, lots of
vegetation and animals saw a bear there one year and a river otter
Occupation/Background: drinking water operator
Number of Witnesses: 3
Length of Observation: 2 or 3 screams at least 3 to 5 seconds long
Two friends and I were asleep in a tent when a blood curdling scream/howel woke us out of a dead
sleep. It sounded like nothing I had ever heard before or since, until I heard some of the recordings on the BFRO site. When I played those sound bytes I finally knew what we had heard. We were all very large athletic types but we huddled like scared little boys. We would not go out of the tent until morning and barely slept the rest of the night. The next day we were going to scout the area in the direction from which the screams came but it is shear cliffs on the other side of the river and we could not get up there. We actually told a Ranger what we heard and he didn’t know of any animal that screams. It almost sounded like a movie woman scream with a growely undertone. awoke to hear horrific screaming on remote side of river. Didn’t know what it was until I heard a Bigfoot recording on BFRO site

7/21/09: This update is late, but I had contacted the witness and have spoken to him by phone for about 30 minutes about the track he found in the mud. This is an older sighting so much of the information given is now dated, but the witness seemed very sincere in his information. He has shown the pictures he took to a Game Warden who didn’t give a definitive opinion as to what they were but as they are the photo of the track from 1988 is included with this report.
