It was friday of Memorial day weekend 2011. A friend and I had nothing to do so I suggested we head out to the pine barrens to go “bigfooting” We had never done this before but I had recently become interested in the topic so we decided to give it a try. So we drove to Batsto historic village in NJ. We parked around 730ish and then hiked out along the Batona trail. After about 2 miles it was getting dark so we decided to stop and set up shop just off the trail. The Batona trail parallels the Batsto river for several miles in that particular area of Wharton State Forest, so we were close to the river. Anyway, we sat in silence for about 30-45 min to let darkness completely settle in. Then at 9pm we started doing wood knocks. We did one or two knocks every 15-20 minutes. Around 945-10 we did our 4th set of knocks. Then exactly 1 minute later there was 2 quick and loud clacks off a tree about 40-50 yrds away.
We waited anxiously for about 45 seconds and then I “whooped” in its direction. Then maybe 15
seconds later it slowed ripped a large off a tree and threw it to the ground. At that point we were pretty scared so we turned on our flashlights but unfortunately there was a large wall of under brush and small tree/bushes right in front of us so we could not see in its direction….and we didn’t have the balls to walk around the brush to get a better look so we got out of there. I guess I should also note that aside from a few chirps from birds here and there it was completely silent. We never heard the animal approach or leave….it was just the isolated knocks and branch break which we recorded. We have been out there almost every weekend since and have not any similar experiences.

Encounter::

Number of Witnesses: no one but me
Length of Observation: I believe about a minute or a little more
Animal Description: Blackish brown hair all over, it was on all fours at first. I thought it was a bear.
Though the odor was more of like a skunk and something rotten. Almost like a decaying animal. Which is what caught my attention in the first place. When it stood up it made a low growl and looked at me quickly Then moved up the mountain at a good clip never looking back. The face was grayish with a darker flatish nose kind of like an ape. Dark eyes, and it was Tall and bulky
Aprox. Height: about 7 to 8 ft tall
Aprox. Weight: I’ve seen 500 lb black bear before this thing had to weigh at least 700 lbs just from it’s
height and bulk
Head/Facial Description: It made a quick glance at me, i can remember is it was very hairy around
the head. The forehead was flat and wrinkly, grayish black with the nose being flatish and darker than the rest of the face. It bared teeth that seemed yellowish but all I can remember is there color. It was a very quick glance but the eyes looked dark maybe black before it took off.
Can Witness Provide a Sketch of Animal Seen?: No
Any Odor? If so, Description: Cross between a skunk and decaying animal
Vocalizations Heard?: low growl, almost like a moan as if I was interfering in what it was doing there
Wood Knocks Heard?: No
I was heading home from a bad day’s fishing, slowly head down this steep mountain about a mile either way.
I’ve gone this way many times but this time was different. I could smell what I thought was a skunk and was trying to make sure I didn’t run into it. although I had no other way down this mountain to get to the parking lot. About half way down and to my right I thought I saw a bear and I stood still so as not to startle it. Hoping it would just go away. it was about 40 to 50 ft. away from me and to my right, on the other side of the creek. It was low to the ground kind of like it was digging out something from under a fallen tree. Then it made a low growl like moan and squatted and stood up. That’s when I realized this wasn’t a bear. It was at that point when I felt a chill run thru me, it was bigger than anything I had ever seen in the Jersey woods. The stench was terrible, it quickly looked my way which is when I saw it’s face and teeth. It scared the hellout of me because I knew I couldn’t run anywhere. It had hairy baseball mitt size hands (or i should say hand cause all I saw was his right one as it grabbed a tree to pull it’s way up the mountain. It seemed to know where it was going without any hesitation. It was all so quick, but it left quite an impression on me for sure. I was shaking and had to compose myself as I made my way back down the mountain to my car. I sat there in my car, shaking but kind of relieved. I headed home still smelling that thing in my nose, by the way that was the last time I went to ramapo lake.

July 17,1977 0230 am Owassa Road off Rt 206 near Cluvers Lake,NJ.I was traveling back from the Dover Station after picking up some Camp Councilers we just turned off of Rt 206 onto Owassa Rd heading west no more than abt 15 min, a small car also traveling in front or us when the Creature walking upright came out of the high grass on the left and stepped into the road,it stood 3 feet higher than the roof of the car that was in front of us,the creature turned its head and looked in my direction,it’s eye’s shined in my headlights. I jamed on the breaks startleing my passanges who were sitting in the back, Fished aroung for a flashlight and Me and my front passanger friend jusped out of the van, by that time time in went into the high brush along the mountain, the two of us tried to follow looking for tracks in the dark, came back to the van and started to discuss what just happened. We flagged down the next car and tried to speak to the motorist who wasn’t interested in what we had to say and left quickley.
Upon arriving at Camp I telephoned the State Police “who asked what bar we were in?” I explained our sighting, finally spoke to someone who knew of sightings in the area and He would file a report. The Next day when I called the State Police no report had been filed.
March 28,1978 I lead a group of friends into the area of the sighting and found several tracks in the snow,I took a photo with my foot along side for reference, the tracks seem to go deep into the Bear swamp ,it was getting dark and we went back ,I didn’t want to get lost at night.
I know the backwoods of Northern NJ ,I’ve backpacked the AT and Canoed the Delaware River and spend much of my free time up in thoes woods along Old Mine Road,I’ve fished the Ponds and creeks and know ther is pleanty of wilderness for a creature to rome between states of NJ,Penna & NY . I’m now disabiled and can walk no more (not much anyway). I travel up in the woods now as much as i can ,still looking and listening for that next encounter.

In 1993 my wife & I were camping with our friends in Wharton State Forrest. It was a week before the memorial day weekend. We wanted to go before because it gets crowded down there. When we arrived the park rangers told us we were the only campers there for that week. Also at the time I was the only one that knew that there may be BF inN.J. in the group.(I had mentioned such ,but of course was laughed at.)I had gone down to camp & have fun though ,not researching them at the time.Nothing much happened for the first few nights, but by the third night started hearing vocalizations,& distant wood knockings. At the time I didnt think much of it,until the sixth night. It was 3:00am & I stumbled out of my tent to get our canopy, because it started to light rain.As I stumbled I stubbed my toe on the tent cord,at the time yelling my !@$#% head off.Just then 20 to 30 feet to the right & behind my tent something let off this sound & took off crashing through the trees & brush ,I also noticed that foul odor again. It had scared me so bad that I slept in the truck with my wife.Of course everyone else was still asleep until the commotion,& then laughed at me when I told them what had happened. But when the next day came they saw broken branches about 5 to 7 feet off the ground,& the ground was all tore up like something was in a hurry to get outta there. The next morn went to ranger station & they came out & said it was possibly a bear or deer. There is no way those animals could make the destruction that there was that far off the ground ,could they? After that experience I have constantly researched in that area. Then when I joined NESRA &read the PINE BARREN investigation chris’s team had done it intrigued me.IDo believe & know without a doubt that BF Lives in the Pineys.I also have afew other weird things happen down there. Will be doing more research down there soon for fall is coming,& any evidence I
retrieve will be more than glad to share with my BF brothers. Keep squatching!
