While out grilling steaks and ribs last evening with my buddy Ralph, we heard three vocalizations at dusk. At 9:08pm Ralph and I were hanging out at the Alma Farm picnic area in North Bolton, this is at the intersection of Rout 9N and Padanarum Rd.. Our conversation was interrupted by a strange vocalization. This vocalization lasted for 2-3 seconds and captured our attention and sparked speculation, about 12 seconds after the first vocal we heard another which shut us up in anticipation of another which did occur about 12 seconds later, at this point we were listening with our full attention.
Sounds heard: Moan-Howl, vocalization
Number of sounds: 3 (three)
Approximate duration of each sound: 2-3 seconds
Approximate separation of sounds: 12 seconds, evenly spaced
Direction of source: East by Southeast (across rout 9N)
Estimated distance of source of sounds: 75 yards, seemed to be moving to the North at a slow steady
rate.
Terrain at source location: Swampy-Tangle
Approximate volume of sounds: 55-60(dB)
Background noise: Conversation at time of first vocal, utter silence for the next 2 (two) vocals.
After the third vocalization, it occurred to me that my digital camera records video with sound. I started recording for 2 minutes but no more vocals were heard. Ralph stepped to the side after the vocalizations to look and listen and reported hearing what seemed to him to be labored breathing, as if something had been running. We remained at the location for another hour in hopes of hearing more but nothing strange was heard. As this was a social outing and not research, Ralph and I were drinking beer, I drank 4 and a half 12oz bottles of Bass Ale over the course of 6 hours and I believe Ralph drank 5. As a further note, the location of this incident is squarely situated in what I consider to be an already established and documented prime research area.
